On wargames campaigns (after Polemarch)

Spotlight Article Graphic

"If one is to do this, it is quite useful to read Caesar to see the kinds of things he considered important when choosing if or when to give battle." Prufrock muses about the value of running campaigns for the ancients gaming he prefers. See why "It turned out I'd rather refight Zama for the tenth time than try to sustain interest in endless minor encounters between similarly equipped neighbours over local concerns."

Fast, simple, not expensive, little errata, but only reasonably fun. (War game Review)

In his review on BoardGameGeek, Brendan Whyte first turns a critical eye towards the components and rules and lists their shortcomings. Game play fares better: “…the game is fast and quite fun”. Whyte then goes into comprehensive details covering game mechanics and spares no criticism for the game opponent (AI). His discussion concerning solitaire board games vs solitaire computer games is very interesting.

Grognard.com Site Status

Grognard.com: Site Status

To quote the Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd ed:- Grognard: A soldier of Napoleon's Old Guard; a veteran soldier; grumbler (French). 'Grognard' is also slang for someone who likes playing wargames.

My name is Mark D'Agosta and I assumed the duties of "Grognard.com" caretaker in December of 2013.

Priority #1: Get the site activated and accepting shares/submissions again.

Please utilize the new Grognard.com Share Page to share or submit article or files of interest to other grognards. See the new instructions for Shares before sending anything.

Priority #2: Clean up the site's data.
You can't build something new on a shaky foundation. Site data has to be cleaned, organized and moved into a proper database first. Many dead or invalid links must also be removed or fixed. (In Progress)

Priority #3: Redesign and modernize the site. (In Progress)

I'm looking forward to being a good steward for Grognard.com and appreciate your support and patience during this transitional period.

- Mark D. - mark @ grognard.com

27-Feb-2014 Update: Switched the site from weekly update to continuous update and modernized the front page a bit.
29-Mar-2014 Update: Getting close to completing the games database. This will allow me to add a proper game search feature. It won't be long now...
13-Apr-2014 Update: Published the first Grognard.com Original article, the first in a series of planned Grognard.com originals.
04-May-2014 Update: All Games and Articles moved into the database. Now working on cleaning up Game Series and Publisher data.
08-Jun-2014 Update: The Games and Articles tables are undergoing final testing and will first be accessible via the mobile version of the Grognard.com site. More functionality will become available over the next few months.
13-Jun-2014 Update: The "mobile" version of the Grognard site will be undergoing testing by Grognard.com subscribers starting on Sunday, June 15th. It will be made available to the general public as soon as testing is completed, hopefully by the end of June.
26-Jun-2014 Update: The first interview of the new Grognard.com "Face to Face" series has been published. (Interviewed Brad Cummings and Craig Moffitt of Shenandoah Studio and game designer Mark Herman about their newest release 'Desert Fox').
29-Jun-2014 Update: The 1st release of the "mobile" version of the Grognard.com site is available to the public. You can check the Latest Updates, view the latest Challenge info, and search for games/articles using the new database. There are many more mobile features to come.
11-Nov-2014 Update: Have made a test site availble to Grognard.com email subscribers so they can test the new "Game Search" and Google site search features that will allow site visitors to be more specific in their searches, rather than having to use the "alphabet" pages and then manually search the page for game info. Expect to "go live" with this site version within a few weeks.
24-Nov-2014 Update: All game and article data has been moved into the database. Site visitors can now search by Game Name or Pubisher. In addition, there is a Google site search feature so users can search for anything across the entire Grognard.com site.
31-Dec-2014 Update: The format of the Grognard Challenge has been finalized, including the layout of the commentary, listing of the current game, listing of the winners, etc. and will remain this way for a few months (before the next reorganization).
28-Feb-2015 Update: About halfway completed with the game data updates. After this stage, every game will have a box cover graphic, and the database will be searchable by Designer.
15-Mar-2015 Update: Beginning data validation work on the Wargaming Clubs/Organizations listings. This data will be completely updated, revised (if need be), and moved to the database for easier searching. In tandem with the data cleanup, I'm trying to expand the number of clubs listed.
28-Mar-2015 Update: The Grognard Challenge data is finally completely done. All winners, game names and dates are now up to date except for the first 30 Challenges, for which there is no date. I have consulted with Alan Poulter to see if he might have some info on this in his archives, but no such luck... But 99% completed is pretty damn good!
11-Nov-2015 Update: Started offering site visitors the ability to become "registered" users. There are new site features on the way that will require registration. The Grognard Challenge is being automated and updated, so registration will be required for that as well.

1-Oct-2016 Update: The Grognard Challenge has been automated. Now, instead of sending emails with guesses, Challengers will have to be registered users and will select their answers from a multiple choice list. This will be much easier on us because now Challenges can be scheduled in advance and no one has to physically be available on the Grognard side on Sundays. It will also encourage greater participation since anyone can just take a guess, even if they don't know the answer and will have a 20% chance of getting it right! Looking forward to adding more "registered users only" features in the future.
