Reflections on (another) McGill megagame

Spotlight Article Graphic

This year's rules "...facilitated the sort of creative, emergent gameplay that is at the heart of a successful megagame." Rex Brynen of Paxsims gives an AAR on the War in Binni Megagame, held at McGill University on February 11th . Apparently the event was a great success, and had a strange twist: "Little did the players know that, hidden among the participants were a small group of secret cultists."

Charles S. Roberts Award - Hall of Fame

The Charles S. Roberts Award

Charles S. Roberts, in whose name this award is given, invented the modern wargame industry virtually single-handedly. As a designer and original owner-operator of Avalon Hill, he was responsible for the creation of the first modern wargame, including many of the developments, such as the Combat Results Table (CRT), which were later to become commonplace. When the debts of Roberts' fledgling company mounted, he sold the operation to one of his most serious creditors, his printer, Monarch, who continued operating the company until selling it to the toy and game conglomerate, Hasbro in 1998. Roberts himself designed the following groundbreaking games (given in order of publication), several of which have become known as "the Avalon Hill Classics":

  • Tactics, 1952 (republished 1983)
  • Tactics II, 1958 (republished 1961, 1972)
  • Gettysburg, 1958 (republished 1961, 1964)
  • U-Boat, 1959 (republished 1961)
  • Verdict, 1959 (republished 1960)
  • Chancellorsville, 1961
  • Civil War, 1961
  • D-Day, 1961
  • Dispatcher, 1961
  • Nieuchess, 1961
  • Bismarck, 1962
  • Afrika Korps, 1964 (republished 1965, 1977)
