On wargames campaigns (after Polemarch)

Spotlight Article Graphic

"If one is to do this, it is quite useful to read Caesar to see the kinds of things he considered important when choosing if or when to give battle." Prufrock muses about the value of running campaigns for the ancients gaming he prefers. See why "It turned out I'd rather refight Zama for the tenth time than try to sustain interest in endless minor encounters between similarly equipped neighbours over local concerns."

Fast, simple, not expensive, little errata, but only reasonably fun. (War game Review)

In his review on BoardGameGeek, Brendan Whyte first turns a critical eye towards the components and rules and lists their shortcomings. Game play fares better: “…the game is fast and quite fun”. Whyte then goes into comprehensive details covering game mechanics and spares no criticism for the game opponent (AI). His discussion concerning solitaire board games vs solitaire computer games is very interesting.

Search for this and related games with Noble Knight

Description:

No Retreat!: The Russian Front is a new deluxe edition of designer Carl Paradis's two-player wargame that retells the story of the titanic struggle between the invading armies of Nazi Germany versus Communist Russia during WW2 at a player-friendly and manageable level of scope and difficulty. This edition combines both the original game and its two extensions (Na Berlin! and No Surrender!) using deluxe components of “Twilight Struggle Deluxe Edition” quality. With only 50 Army/Front sized counters for the Tournament game, and 70 for the whole campaign, and with very low stacking, it’s a quick-playing yet realistic affair that favors the strategic and offensive-minded player.

Book & Game Pairings from Clio’s Board Games: Russia’s War and No Retreat! The Russian Front

The "...book aims at unshrouding the mystery of the Soviet performance in World War II." Clios Board Games offers an interesting pairing of book, Russia's War, by Richard Overy, and game, GMT Games' No Retreat: The Russian Front. Interesting how both book and game explain and model how Soviet "…use of the forces at their disposal was entirely different in 1944 from what it had been in 1941 – more flexible, more focused, less encumbered by rigid top-down structure."

No Retreat! The Russian Front - Unboxing

The "No Retreat!" series was one of which I thought for a long time but never had opportunity to play. Finally, I got the copy of the base game - The Russian front - and created the Unboxing. It will be no spoiler to say, rarely I have seen such fantastic components like in that game - thick, mounted map, great counters, nice game aids. A true beauty!
