On wargames campaigns (after Polemarch)

Spotlight Article Graphic

"If one is to do this, it is quite useful to read Caesar to see the kinds of things he considered important when choosing if or when to give battle." Prufrock muses about the value of running campaigns for the ancients gaming he prefers. See why "It turned out I'd rather refight Zama for the tenth time than try to sustain interest in endless minor encounters between similarly equipped neighbours over local concerns."

Fast, simple, not expensive, little errata, but only reasonably fun. (War game Review)

In his review on BoardGameGeek, Brendan Whyte first turns a critical eye towards the components and rules and lists their shortcomings. Game play fares better: “…the game is fast and quite fun”. Whyte then goes into comprehensive details covering game mechanics and spares no criticism for the game opponent (AI). Game: Carrier

(c2)

Publisher: Victory Games
Game Type: Board
Designer(s): Jon Southard
Search for this and related games with Noble Knight

Description:

Carrier is a solitaire game from Victory Games depicting the fighting in the Solomon Islands during World War II between Allied and Japanese forces. The game was designed by Jon Southard and uses a solitaire system similar to his earlier game Tokyo Express. The player is in command of the Allied Task Force, mostly American, but occasionally having British Commonwealth elements, fighting to defeat the Japanese Navy. The game also has a reference to the 1980 movie The Final Countdown, where the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and its air group can fight as a less serious note.

Carrier Air to Sea – Basic Game

Carrier by Victory Games is perhaps lesser known in the wargame hobby compared to some other Pacific war carrier battles games. Though often overlooked, it is an excellent simulation of aircraft carrier warfare. The Big Board gives an overview of a typical airstrike utilizing the Coral Sea 1942 scenario.

Carrier - Solomons Brawl

"We roll for Japanese intentions on the Close Reaction Table and the Japanese are up for a fight." Brad of Hexsides and Hand Grenades is back to enjoying Victory Games' Carrier, trying a nighttime surface-force only scenario. As the U.S. commander, he has a few disappointments... "If I were a Star Wars admiral, Darth Vader would have certainly choked the hell out of me by now."

Carrier - Scenario 4: Air Search Officer

"... knowing that somewhere out there, someone was trying to find you and kill you and the only thing that you could do to avoid that was to find them and kill them first." Blogger Brad continues his exploration of Victory Games' Carrier, switching from combat scenarios to the suspense of a search challenge. The game's fog-of-war aspects create real hit and miss possibilities, so that a player "might end up sending a strike force out to bomb a coral reef. Life is like that." Brad's recap lets you "see the elegance of [the game's] core design shine through"!
